2030
Robin was standing in line for a hot dog at the stand nearest the studio, when the cell phone in her back pocket started to vibrate.
She glanced at the name flashing across the phone then brought it to her ear.
“Hey kiddo, what’s up?”
“You have to help us!” The voice on the other end hissed.
“Amy? What’s wrong?”
“Dad is forcing us to sit in the living room and listen to a story about how he met Mom! Aunt Robin, he’s been talking for hours! He keeps insisting that it’s all part of the story, but he goes off on these tangents and-“
“Whoa. Sweetie. Slow down. What’s Ted doing?”
There was a deep breath and then, “Mom’s out of town for the weekend, on that work retreat, or whatever, and this morning, Dad looked up from his paper and said ‘kids, have ever told you the story of how I met your mother?’ and we said no, I mean, how long can it take to tell one story, right? So then he starts talking, and it turns out it’s not just one story, it’s a ton of stories and we’ve been listening ever since and he still hasn’t even met Mom yet!”
That was odd, to say the least. Ted and his wife had the ‘how we met’ story down pat. She’d heard them tell it dozens of times, and so far not one had taken more than a few minutes.
“What did he start with?”
“The night he met you.”
What? “What? Seriously? That was years before he met your mom!”
Amy huffed. “I know! But if we ask he just says ‘everything’s connected kids, a butterfly flaps it’s wings and there’s a hurricane, a tiny pebble can make an avalanche, i before e, except after c.’ We just now got to Aunt Lilly being pregnant. The first time. He won’t stop, you have to talk to him!”
“Jesus. Where is he now?”
“In the kitchen. He said he had to get some water. As soon as he left the room, I called you and Sam called Uncle Barney. I don’t know if he got through though.”
The phone beeped. “Hang on a sec Amy, I’m getting a text.”
She opened the text and couldn’t help the laugher that escaped.
Robin, Robin, Robin! Ted is telling the children very specific details about me! HE’S TELLING THE CHILDREN ROBIN. THE AIR OF MYSTERY IS GONE.
Still grinning, Robin returned to the conversation. “Okay girlie, here’s the deal. I’ll talk to your dad, try to get him to wrap things up a little quicker, but I think you should listen to the rest of the story. God knows he can be longwinded, but it’s sweet that he wants to share that much of his life with you. A lot of parents wouldn’t do that. And it sounds like you’re getting close to the end anyway. You’ve sat through what, five years? Six?”
“Something like that.”
“So what’s a few more months, right?”
“I guess…”
“Second part of the deal is this. Some afternoon this week, you and Sam come by after school and we make sure that your father hasn’t told you any glaring lies about me. Agreed?”
“Agreed.”
