This is my third read, and this story gets better each time.
He knows, can tell from the way her heart speeds, and her breath catches, ad the way her body reacts to him stronger than it has before, that she wants it too. That if her mind could just catch up and wrap around the concept, she’d be only too happy to join him in this mad new dance.
That's one of the fascinating things about the relationship - how right and how wrong they get each other. (after all, he claims she's the only slayer with friends and family, but the flashbacks in FFL prove he's wrong on that account.) With this part, I'm not sure that his belief that "she wants it too" isn't self-serving fantasy even if partially right. And it's one of the things that leads them into badness IMO.
Neither of them knows these steps so they make them up as the go, until one day they discover that they do know how to do this after all. And things shift again.
Wonderful meta commentary as well as beautifully written prose. (Did I mention I'm in awe of writers whose prose is spare and simple and elegant, packing a lot of feeling and nuance into just a few words?) I notice that a lot of fans seem impatient with her - and/or him - in S7, and their reasons are very good ones: she's not more clear, more direct and open with her feelings, doesn't say "I love you" sooner, etc. But I think what gets forgotten or overlooked is that they are both learning, as you note here. This is new to both of them and there are no role models, no templates, in their own circle of friends or the wider world, that they can refer to. It's a relationship and a dynamic built from scratch.
